1 The Facility

Isfahan Oil Refinery has been operating in the field of crude oil refining and petroleum products production and downstream feedstuffs since 1979 and now produces about 23% of the country’s petroleum products.

The company is located in the northwest of Isfahan with a total area of 340 hectares.

2 General overview and process description

This part describes the process of the Demineralization (DM) Water Treatment Plant for the Isfahan Oil Refinery Utility & Off-Site Project to provide Demineralized (DM) water.
Our treatment process for the Isfahan Oil Refinery Utility & Off-Site Project is planned to treat Raw water with an average capacity of 17000 m3/d. The raw water is collected from the upstream RO Package and Clarifier plant. Feed specification is shown below table:

The Demineralization (DM) Water Treatment Plant consists of below main units:

  • Self-cleaning filter; The flow enters self-cleaning filters (100 microns) to remove of suspended solids and other elements that can cause serious problems for other units and devices. Then Filtered water goes to UF trains.
  • Ultrafiltration process; UF physically separates solids from liquid streams based on the principle of size-exclusion. In this project UF system consists of 4 UF trains and each train has 40 modules of dead-end membranes.
  • Reverse osmosis process; To produce permeate water with TDS less than 0.5 mg/L, first the flow is sent to RO1 (recovery 75%) and the produced permeate is sent to RO2 (recovery 89%). The concentrate of RO2 is sent to the storage tank after the UF unit because of its low TDS compared to the TDS of raw water. The concentrate of RO1 is sent to RO3 to produce permeate water with TDS less than 100 mg/L with recovery of about 80%. Therefore, it is predicted that the total recovery of reverse osmosis systems will be more than 90%.

The next process is mixed bed filtration to remove the residual TDS from water. RO permeate water is delivered to the Ion Exchange unit (Mixed Bed Filters) which is out of ZETA’s scope of work.
